Gandhi Jayanti: The Man Behind the Ganddee Name

Updated: Nov 13

Ever wondered why we chose Ganddee as the name for the app? Here's the answer.

A statue of Gandhi

Today, we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, which marks the 154th birthday of Gandhi, an influential leader in India’s independence movement. Born under British colonial rule in 1869, Gandhi brought a new approach to revolution when he came back to India in 1915 - nonviolent civil disobedience.

Rather than using force, Gandhi mobilized the power of the Indian people through peaceful protests like the famous 240-mile Salt March against unjust taxation.

Gandhi's promotion of truth, nonviolence, selflessness and unity across divides inspired us deeply. His approach of "truth force" demonstrated the power of peaceful protest to drive change.

We did not want to borrow Gandhi's name and legacy outright. However, we have always been moved by the saying commonly attributed to him: "Be the change you want to see in the world." This philosophy of individual empowerment motivates us.

So we named our app Ganddee - a name related to Gandhi, but distinct. The name Ganddee is short, snappy, and easy to remember. It reflects our belief that each of us can contribute to positive change through our daily choices.

Our app helps people discover local sustainable businesses, empowering small everyday actions that collectively make a difference.

When it all feels "doom and gloom", let's remember what Gandhi once said:

"The future depends on what we do in the present."

Ganddee empowers you to be the change you want to see in the world.
