Second-hand Shops on Dundee's Commercial Street

Dundee has never been shy about embracing positive social change. Its £1 billion waterfront regeneration project—begun all the way back in 2001—is in full swing, and the city was named the electric vehicle capital of Europe in 2018.
Given all this, it should come as no surprise that Scotland's fourth biggest city has an awesome thrift scene.
We recently visited Commercial Street, one of Dundee's main shopping thoroughfares, where two fantastic independent pre-loved clothes stores have set up premises. There are plenty of coffee options when you want a break from all that second-hand retail therapy, plus the waterfront's only a few minutes' walk away!
Affordable men's clothing at Thrift City
Thrift City is where you can find pre-loved designer clothing, shoes, and accessories at affordable prices. Established in 2024, the shop bills itself as Dundee's 'best-kept secret', but we think that everyone should know about it.
The store has a shop-by-kilo pricing system: new stock is £35/kg when it arrives on Wednesdays. The price sinks lower over the week, reaching a tempting £15/kg every Monday.
We love this candy-shop by-weight business model, which generates some great bargains for Commercial Street shoppers. Found something you like but it's more than you want to spend? Come back tomorrow and buy it for less. Just keep your fingers crossed that no one else had their eye on it too...
Women's fashion at Preloved Secret Garden
Owned by the same innovative entrepreneur, Jack Shiffers, Preloved Secret Garden works on a similar, by-weight model to his first shop, which is literally just across the road. This time, we're talking women's fashion. You'll find all kinds of popular high street brands, including Zara, River Island, and H&M, restocked every Thursday.
Wondering about prices? Jack explains the system:
On restock day, the price per item is set at £12 and then it goes down to £10, £8, £6, £5, and £3 as the week goes by. The prices for shoes go from £12 down to £10, £8, £6, £4, and £2.
So if you're lucky, you can pick up most of an outfit for the cost of a Commercial Street flat white!
