What is Cancer Research UK?
Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is the UK’s largest independent cancer research charity, dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating all forms of cancer. It funds scientists, doctors and nurses to carry out groundbreaking research, provides accurate and accessible cancer information to the public, and campaigns on policy issues such as smoking prevention and early diagnosis. Much of its work is financed by public donations, fundraising events and retail income.
CRUK operates nationally across the UK and the Isle of Man, supporting research and awareness efforts throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Its research and public health initiatives aim to improve prevention, detection and treatment outcomes for people affected by cancer across the British Isles.
Cancer Research UK Charity Shops
Cancer Research UK has historically run one of the UK's largest charity shop networks, with hundreds of shops and superstores on high streets and retail parks nationwide, selling donated clothes, accessories, books, homewares and occasional furniture and electricals to raise funds for cancer research. These stores are supported by volunteers and staff, and also include larger "superstore" formats offering a wider range of stock. In 2025, the charity has announced a reshaping of its retail footprint, with plans to close a number of shops over the next 18 months while maintaining around 320 core stores and expanding its larger superstore concept - a response to rising operational costs and changing shopping habits.
