On my recent trip to India, I was struck by a realisation. Long gone are the days when carrying our own water bottles was the norm. Instead, the convenience of plastic bottled water has taken over. One such example is my trip in Indian Railways, I was taken aback to learn that approximately 1.8 million plastic water bottles are produced daily, totalling up to 650 million a year from this source alone.
This is not just happening in India. In the UK, people use about 7.7 billion plastic bottles every year which is equally alarming. Even though people try to recycle, only about 44% of plastic bottles are recycled in the UK. In the US, it's even lower, at about 27%.
